Robert Dale Vance is an emeritus professor who taught philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for 35 years and made art when time allowed.  Along the way he acquired an MFA in studio art and created large abstract welded metal sculptures.  This passion for art evolved into photography.  While intrigued by photography's direct connection to reality, he downplayed its documentary and narrative aspects and focused instead on the gap between documentation and narration, where concerns about aesthetic experience - with revealing beauty - are paramount. His writings focus on the intersection of art and philosophy.  His sculptures and photographs have been exhibited widely and have received numerous awards.
